I’m excited to announce some long-overdue and much-needed updates to the Clan Lamont Society of North America’s official website.
Our website is an important resource for Clan Lamont members, descendants, friends, and anyone interested in learning more about our clan, its history, leadership, and traditions. With that in mind, we have been working to make the site more informative, useful, and engaging.
Several new sections have now been added, with more content planned for the future.
Clan Leadership
It is important to understand that clan leadership and clan society leadership are not the same thing. A Scottish clan is a historic institution with its own traditions, lineage, and leadership, while a clan society is a modern organization with elected leadership, established to support and promote the interests of the clan and its members.
The new content provides information about the individuals who serve in leadership roles within Clan Lamont, complementing the existing information about the leadership of the Clan Lamont Society of North America.
Septs and Allied Families
We have also added a new section covering septs and families traditionally associated with Clan Lamont.
This subject can be confusing because lists of Lamont sept names found online and in various publications can contain dozens of entries. At first glance, some lists appear to contain more than eighty names. Upon closer examination, however, many of these are simply different spellings, forms, translations, or anglicizations of the same or related names.
The linguistic history of Argyll—where Gaelic, Scots, English, and Norse influences have interacted for centuries—helps explain many of these variations. When the different forms are considered together, the number of distinct family names traditionally associated with Clan Lamont is considerably smaller.
The new section provides additional context and encourages those researching their family history to look beyond a surname alone. Many surnames associated with Clan Lamont are also found among other Scottish clans and in other parts of Scotland. Genealogical research and a family’s historical connection to Cowal and Argyll, the traditional heartland of Clan Lamont, can be important in establishing a more definitive connection.
Coming Events
Another new addition is our Coming Events page.
One of the great strengths of the Clan Lamont community is the opportunity to gather together at Highland games, Scottish festivals, clan gatherings, and other events throughout North America and beyond.
The new events page will provide a central location where members and friends of Clan Lamont can find information about upcoming opportunities to meet, celebrate our heritage, and connect with one another.
We intend to continue expanding this page as new events are announced.

Our goal is to make the Clan Lamont Society of North America website a valuable resource for Clan Lamont members, descendants, societies, and friends around the world.
